Grab your golf clubs and head to Happy Valley to play one of the best courses in the state.
Toftrees Golf Club has been rated 4 and ½ stars by Golf Digest magazine’s “Places to Play.” You’ll love the view as the course is located cozily in the middle of 1,500 scenic acres and provides challenges for golfers of all skill levels.
Toftrees means “home among the trees” and at times you will certainly feel that way when you’re walking along the fairways.
The signature hole on the course is the par-4 ninth, which sits along the course’s main water hazard and features several large bunkers on the right side of the hole. The 392-yard hole requires an accurate shot over water to reach the fairway.
The course yardage ranges from 5,500 yards to 7,100 yards with five different sets of tee boxes to accommodate golfers of all levels.
Breathtaking! The view from every tee box is astounding with mountains, rolling hills, and a perfectly manicured course. Course designer Ed Ault set up each hole to create a unique and private experience. Before you tee off, it’s worth stepping back and admiring your surroundings, if only for a second.
For those that like to test their driving ability and embrace the difficulty of a long hole, look no further than the course’s par-5 eighth, which is a whopping 634 yards from the black tee box. The hole is the longest on the course, but not the only hole that stretches over 600 yards.
The par 5 14th is 609 yards from the black. Golfers should be leery of the collection of fairway bunkers on the right side, but only after they make a good first tee shot past the trees and bunkers on the left of the fairway.
During the week, the rates are $54. From 2-3:50 p.m. the rates decrease by $5 to $49. After 4 p.m. the price drops to $44. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it’s $74, but from 2-3:50 p.m. it’s $59 and $54 after 4 p.m. More information on rates, including golf club rental prices here.
Make it a full day
After your round, pay a visit to the Carnegie Inn & Spa, which is located right next to the golf course. The Carnegie Inn & Spa is truly a remarkable dining experience, no matter if you stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Led by Executive Chef Lisa Palermo, the inn is the definition of fine dining.
If a long day on the course has worn you out, relax with the inn’s newly opened spa, ESSpa Kozmetika, which houses a steam room, and a relaxation area that directly overlooks the 17th green at Toftrees. It also has private treatment rooms and a manicure and pedicure area.

** In addition to Toftrees, there is another great course to play in State College. The Penn State Golf Courses feature two championship level courses –appropriately named Blue & White—and has weekly specials.
Penn State Golf Courses have excellent practice facilities so you can work on your game before you tee off. They have a 32-stall driving range and a 7,600 square foot chipping green with sand bunker.
