Fall is one of the busiest times of the year in Happy Valley. Not just because of the return of a new school year and a new football season, but the many great traveling shows and local events that are scheduled every year. And, as usual, the next several months here in Happy Valley look to be jam-packed with thrilling shows, exciting sporting events and high-profile concerts.

Here are ten events worth making to trip to Happy Valley to enjoy.

Penn State Parents & Families Weekend –September 28 & 30

One of the most popular weekends all year in Happy Valley is Parents & Family weekend. The Penn State Alumni Association is again scheduled to host a variety of events, including a Blue & White Barbecue, tours of the Old Main Bell Tower and more.

Tussey Mountain Oktoberfest—September 29

This inaugural event aims to bring the best of the German celebration to Happy Valley. The event will feature plenty of food, fun, beer and music. Tickets are $10. A VIP package is offered for $45 dollars.

Shaver’s Creek Music Festival – September 30

The third annual Shaver’s Creek Music Festival will feature lively local bands such as Pure Cane Sugar, Grain, and Dreams and Bones. Enjoy a fun day of music while relaxing in the tranquil outdoor setting of Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Tickets are $5 for members, seniors and students, and $10 for nonmembers. Standing Stone Coffee Company and Eden View Organics will provide delicious food items.

Penn State Homecoming Weekend – October 5-7

Homecoming is a great weekend to visit State College whether you’re an alum or not. There will be plenty of activities ongoing, including the homecoming parade on Friday evening and the pep rally and royalty coronation on October 5. Of course, you can’t miss the Penn State vs. Northwestern football game on October 6.

Penn State Football vs. Ohio State – October 27

Arguably the biggest home game Penn State has on its schedule this year, Ohio State returns to Happy Valley for the first time since 2009. Anytime the Buckeyes return to Happy Valley, it’s always an electric atmosphere and this year should be no different. This matchup is the one and only “Whiteout” on Penn State’s schedule for 2012 so if you plan on attending, make sure to wear white.

Bruce Springsteen Concert—November 1

Witness Bruce Springsteen, a true legend of rock and roll, bring his E Street Band back to Happy Valley on his “Wrecking Ball” tour. It’s the first time Bruce has been in Happy Valley since 2009 and you never know when or if he’ll be back, so see him while you can!

Carrie Underwood Concert —November 13

Grammy-award winning country music superstars don’t come around often, so when they do, it’s a must-see event. Carrie Underwood makes her first trip to Happy Valley and tickets are going fast.

St. Lawrence String Quartet –November 14

Enjoy a night of classical Beethoven at Schwab Auditorium as the St. Lawrence String Quartet performs the second season of Beethoven’s chamber masterworks. Established in 1989 the St. Lawrence String Quartet has established a reputation as a world-class chamber ensemble. They hail from Stanford University, where they are currently an ensemble in residence. In addition to Beethoven, they perform music from newer composers such as John Adams and Jonathan Berger.

Penn State Wrestling First Home Match – November 16

The two-time defending national champions return to raucous Rec Hall to kick off their quest for a third straight championship. The Nittany Lions will face Lehigh at 7 p.m.

Arlo Guthrie’s Here Comes the Kid Tour – December 2

One of the biggest performances coming to the State Theatre this fall is folk musician Arlo Guthrie. The son of legendary singer and songwriter Woody Guthrie, Arlo has grown up around the best musicians in the world.

Guthrie will strictly be performing solo on this tour, but has performed with symphony orchestras throughout his career. Guthrie has toured throughout the world, playing a wide range of instruments including harmonica, piano and guitar.
