State College and the surrounding area is home to fun and excitement all year round.

Let this article serve as a guide to help you experience the most out of your weekend visit - dining, shopping, performing arts, sporting events and the great outdoors, all here in Happy Valley!

Penn State Sporting Events

The winter sports season is nearly here! That means it’s the return of the two-time defending national champion Penn State wrestling team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Rec Hall and the Bryce Jordan Center are sure to be full of exciting action again this winter.

In addition to those upcoming sports, let’s not forget the men’s and women’s hockey teams are experiencing historic campaigns as they break into Division I.

At Lion Country Lodging, we have terrific dining establishments located either onsite or just next door to our hotels.

Our most notable restaurant is at the Carnegie Inn & Spa (website), which was recently given the award for “Best Fine Dining” in State College and “Best Romantic Dining” in State College. Executive Chef Lisa Palermo works diligently and tirelessly to prepare a culinary experience you won’t experience anywhere else.

Here are some of the top places in town we recommend:

Tour the Penn State campus

Explore Penn State’s expansive campus, which is home to many historical buildings, sports galore and several museums. The Palmer Museum of Art is free and houses thousands of amazing pieces of artwork. The Penn State All-Sports Museum has two floors of interactive exhibits that honor past Penn State athletes in all-sports. A small donation is required for entry.

The campus also has some great photo opportunities. Don’t leave town without getting a picture in front of the lion shrine located just across from Rec Hall!

Family Fun

Young and old, big and small, everyone in your family will be entertained at these area attractions. Get up close to mountain lions, and bears at Penn’s Cave or travel underground on their cavern tours. Ski, snow tube and snowboard in the winter at Tussey Mountain. Work your way through tunnels, stairs, and mazes in a challenging, but fun game of laser tag at What-A-Blast-Laser tag. Or, enjoy public skating at the Penn State Ice Pavilion.
