With sparkling, state-of-the-art venues housing competitive teams, the Penn State spring sports season provides another terrific reason to visit Happy Valley.
The Penn State men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, women’s softball team and men’s baseball team, all have venues that have opened in the past decade. In fact, two have them have opened in the past two years.
Beard Field, home of the Penn State softball team, opened in 2011, while the Penn State Lacrosse Field, (located next to the indoor-sport facility) was christened in the spring of 2012.
The oldest of the bunch is Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, home to the Penn State baseball team, which opened in 2006. Yet, it’s still one of the finest facilities for college baseball in the country, with a seating capacity of 5,406 and 20 luxury boxes.
While the venues are terrific, a great home team playing there is even better. All four programs will have key weekend home dates with rival opponents, as the weather turns warmer.
Bring a blanket with a cooler of food and drinks and relax on the grassy hill while watching the Penn State men’s and women’s lacrosse teams battle the opposition. If you don’t want to sit on the grass, there are also bleachers inside the field area.
The men’s team, currently ranked No. 12 in the country, is lead by head coach Jeff Tambroni who is in his third year at the helm of the program. Key players returning from last year’s team are senior Jack Forster (27 goals, team-leading 15 assists in 2012) and junior Shane Sturgis (19 goals in 2012). The team finished 9-6 in 2012 and lost to Drexel in the CAA semifinals. No doubt, they are looking to take a step forward this year.
