For some, late August is usually a time to begin getting ready for the return to the classroom and saying goodbye to summer.
But for Happy Valley residents and frequent visitors, it’s a time that brings great anticipation thanks in large part to the Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair, one of the oldest family traditions around.
From Aug 22-29 the Grange Fairgrounds in the cozy town of Centre Hall (just 20 minutes from State College) will become a veritable city, full of farmers, merchants and other proprietors looking to display or sell their goods. In fact, more than 2,500 people will camp out and live at the fairgrounds all week long.
It is the 139th time this annual summer festival has occurred and this year it is expected to draw more than 200,000 visitors.

There be musical and entertainment acts aplenty on the grandstand. Each night the Grange Fairgrounds will be rocking with a different vibrant performance. Notable acts this year will include: Country music singer Greg Bates, rock and roll band Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and comedian Mark Lowry.
Let’s not forget the food. Numerous Happy Valley eateries will be on hand to serve their delicacies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. No matter what time of day you stop at the fair, it will be hard to go hungry.
Because the fair is so large, a tram ride is offered around the fairgrounds so you can take a ride to see the whole setup and see where everything is located. For those new to the fair, this could be a valuable option.
Admission to the fair is $6 per person, but weeklong passes are available for $15. Ages 11 and under get in free.
Where else can you get a day full of music, rides, food and more for such a great price? You’d be hard pressed to find a better option than the Grange Fair.
